[Marxism] Kuomintang Candidate Wins Elections in Taiwan

(So it looks like the events in Tibet
had no impact on the voters in Taiwan.)
=======================================

Kuomintang Candidate Wins Elections in Taiwan

Taipei, Mar 22 (Prensa Latina) Ma Ying-jeou, the presidential
candidate for the Kuomintang Party (KMT), won an overwhelming victory
over Frank Hsieh, of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), on
Saturday.

Even before the Central Election Commission (CEC) made the official
results public, Ma was more than two million votes ahead former Prime
Minister Frank Hsieh.

We admit that we lost, Hsieh's spokesman said at night, when there
was a 17-percent difference between the two candidates.

At the same time, voters rejected two controversial referendums on
Taiwan's membership in the United Nations under the name of Taiwan or
Republic of China, which Beijing had considered a secessionist
threat.

That result puts away the ghost of a crisis with China due to the
intentions of the defeated DPP and its incumbent president, Chen
Shui-bian, to declare the island's independence from mainland China.

The president-elect based his campaign on the promise that he will
abandon any plans to split from China and that he will seek peace,
cooperation and stronger economic ties with Beijing.

China considers that Taiwan, which has a population of 23 million and
split from mainland due to political reasons during the Cold War, is
an inalienable part of its territory since ancient times.

Beijing is convinced that reunification will take place and the
province will return to the motherland, as Hong Kong and Macao did a
few years ago.

Ma Ying-jeou, who must take office in May, will have undisputable
powers to keep his election promises, because the KMT controls
three-fourth of Parliament.

People's Daily Urges to Shatter Conspiracy in Tibet

Beijing, Mar 22 (Prensa Latina) The People's Daily, the official
publication of the Communist Party of China, urged to shatter the
conspiracy and to sabotage the activities of the "Tibet independence"
forces.

We must see through the secessionist forces' evil intentions, uphold
the banners of maintaining social stability, safeguard the socialist
legal system and protect people's fundamental interests, said the
newspaper in an article on the riots that took place recently in the
Tibetan capital.

Social stability is the common aspiration of the Chinese people of
all ethnic groups and an important prerequisite of China's reform and
development, it added.

The 1.3 billion Chinese people with the Tibetan people included will
allow no person or force to undermine the stability of the region,
noted the People's Daily.

The newspaper stressed that the violent incidents were created by the
"Tibet independence" forces and masterminded by the Dalai Lama clique
with the vicious intention of undermining the upcoming Olympics and
splitting Tibet from the motherland.

The Communist Party's official publication noted the Dalai clique's
hypocrisy in proclaiming "non-violence", "peaceful dialogue", "not
seeking independence".

China has taken measures to calm the violence, which have safeguarded
the socialist legal system, life, property, and social stability and
have won support from the Chinese people, the newspaper said.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said about 100 countries have
backed the Chinese government's stance on the riots in Tibet.

He added that they spoke out their support for territorial integrity
and stability in that region, and condemned violence and the crimes
committed there.

The Chinese official noted that the efforts to use the Dalai Lama
with second intentions against the Asian nation are doomed to fail.
