This party is not "to the left" of social democracy, but "the left of
social democracy".

This is a strange notion. It never occurred to me to look for any
correlation between the two events.

Actually it started with Oskar Lafontaine, former chairperson of SPD,
former minister of finances in the first Schröder government, and former
prime minister of Saarland for many years, made a public declaration
that he would be prepared to serve as candidate for a common slate of
PDS and WASG in the early elections announced by Schröder in May 2005.

Right after that, polls reported that about 18% of the voters were
prepared to vote for such a combination, but that dropped more and more
in the approach of the election as the SPD was able -- as usual -- to
pose as the tool of working people against the threat of the neo-liberal
attacks on our living standards planned by the Christian Democrats and
the liberals of the FDP.
