Re: [Marxism] Socially Necessary Abstract(?) Labor Time
In addition to the extract from the revision
manuscript I previously quoted, which I am informed
was actually incorporated into the French translation
of Volume I (i.e. the last edition actually overseen
by Marx), the following excerpt from the Manuscript
"Zur Kritik der Politischen Ökonomie" also helps to
clarify the social (NOT physiological) character of
abstract labour:
Tauschwert
setzende Arbeit ist dagegen eine spezifisch
gesellschaftliche Form der Arbeit. Schneiderarbeit
z.B. in ihrer stofflichen Bestimmtheit als besondere
produktive Tätigkeit, produziert den Rock, aber nicht
den Tauschwert des Rocks. Letztern produziert sie
nicht als Schneiderarbeit, sondern als abstrakt
allgemeine Arbeit, und diese gehört einem
Gesellschaftszusammenhang, den der Schneider nicht
eingefädelt hat.

English:
As useful activity directed to the appropriation of
natural factors in one form or another, labour is a
natural condition of human existence, a condition of
material interchange between man and nature, quite
independent of the form of society. On the other hand,
the labour which posits exchange-value is a specific
social form of labour. For example, tailoring if one
considers its physical aspect as a distinct productive
activity produces a coat, but not the exchange-value
of the coat. The exchange-value is produced by it not
as tailoring as such but as abstract universal labour,
and this belongs to a social framework not devised by
the tailor.
