Amira Haas claimed on Democracy Now this morning that there are two meanings to
the word "shoah" in Hebrew, "holocaust" and "disaster," and that it was very
clear in the sentence in question that the minister meant "disaster," not
"holocaust." Given Haas' track record of sympathy to the Palestinian cause, I
would have to give her claim the benefit of the doubt without a strong
counter-claim.
All that is somewhat irrelevant, however, since whatever was "threatened," the
fact remains of what is actually HAPPENING, which, while it may not be a
"holocaust," almost certainly qualifies as "genocide," and certainly qualifies
as a war crime. And whatever word or words are used to describe what is
happening, the need for a worldwide outcry against both the latest Israeli
atrocities, as well as the continuing Israeli occupation of Palestine, remains
great.
