[Marxism] Tariq Ali

Michael,
So we are agreed that Power and Malcolm must be criticized for whitewashing the
effects of the NATO bombings. You seem to think that Milosevic would not have
driven hundreds of thousands of Albanians from their homes had NATO not struck.
You say that he did not have the support to do it, but we are agreed that he
had just driven 300,000 people from their homes which were then burned and
looted, and you don't deny that there had been a a build-up of Serb forces,
the introduction of paramilitaries to the region, and a new integration of
police and military units, designed specifically for operations against the
civilian population. And the quickness and ferocity of his expulsion campaign
after the bombing began all but shows that he was already all but prepared to
continue the ethnocide. All of this is actively ignored by the thinkers at New
Left Review, Monthly Review and Zmag net, and I would love to be proven
otherwise. So far no one has done that. These thinkers also all tell us that
Milosevic could have been negotiated with to respect the autonomy of Kosova as
if any such agreement would have been worth the paper it was written on.
There were no easy answers, and I think you are making the situation seem less
complicated than it was by insisting that Milosevic was all but done driving
people out of Kosova before the bombing began.
A Hartal
