Re: [Marxism] Cockburn contrarianism: GLW, "Vitrification"-waste.
Nick, thanks for that link. I usually read GLW anyway
and always look to read Green's stuff. GLW at least
prints my letters countering Green's arguements :).
He is of course, the main Friends of the Earth
person on nuclear there, but he must not be part
of that 'majority' you spoke of. I'm glad you
were straight on Caldicott. I heard her Aussie
nationalism on high at Sonoma State University
a few years ago when she caused one of the loudish
"silences" I've ever heard at a left oriented meeting
when she condemened the Japanese economy by
arguing that "didn't we beat them in WWII? Why are
the selling all this stuff here in Austraila?".
I'm less concerned with her political views, as
eccentric as they may be, than her views on
nuclear energy which are spread widely and quoted
extensively.
Lastly on GLW...I saw a link a while back to
some "Socialsit Alliance" grand plan to ending
fossil fuel electrical production in Austraila.
Again, I don't think the plan was applicable,
at all, but it was a very serious attempt to deal
with all the important aspects of maintaining the
grid, use of wind, geo-thermal, etc. Do you know
what I'm talking about? I've sence lost it and can't find it.
Vitrification. This is what is already being done
in France (but not in the US). Turning the
waste into glass. The link to the article posted
by Ruthless Critic explains this fairly well,
among other interesting things on the status
of the waste issue. I highly recommend it.
David
