[Marxism] Singer Barbara Dane Honored in Havana

(Musicians, artists and film-makers from the United States are popular
in Cuba, far beyond what most people in the US can imagine. A story of
this kind won't be reported anywhere in the United States, with the
possible exception of the San Francisco Bay area.

Barbara Dane, considered one of the most emblematic US folk, blues and jazz
singer-songwriters, received a special recognition Friday from the Pablo de
la Torriente Brau Cultural Center in Havana.

"We should adopt her and give her citizenship," said Cuban playwright
Abelardo Estornio in presenting Dane with the award that recognizes the
life's work of a musician that developed a very intense friendship with
Cuba.

The relationship dates back to when she was the first US singer to travel to
Cuba after the proclamation of the socialist nature of the revolution. It
was the summer of 1966 and she toured the island and later participated in
the organization of the first Protest Song Encounter sponsored by the Casa
de las Americas cultural center.

Last November she signed on to a letter condemning the US blockade against
Cuba and demanding improved cultural relations between the two nations.

Along with her husband Irwin Silber, Dane is a co-founder of Paredon
Records, which distributed the first records of Silvio Rodriguez and Pablo
Milanes abroad.

"The majority of what I have done in my life has been influenced by Cuba
and its people," said Dane when receiving the recognition, a piece of
ceramic art by Cuban artist Alfredo Sosabravo.

Poet Victor Casaus, the Pablo de la Torrente Center's director, read the
recognition "for her music, commitment and her efforts for the ideals of
liberty and justice."

A concert in Dane's honor preceded the delivery of the award with the
participation of her son Pablo Menendez, director of the group Mezcla;
Alberto Faya, founder of the group Moncada; and nueva trova singers Frank
Delgado and Inti Santana.
