Re: [Marxism] Chess King Bobby Fischer Dies

I want to thank Walter Lippmann for submitting this item. The Cubans'
ability to respond to cultural events like this was outstanding. Of course,
Bobby Fischer had many weird and reactionary ideas, as well as the
progressive ones the Cubans are correct to point out. But he was always one
of my favorite brilliant wild men, and I always identified with him from my
adolescence on.

Of course, I also had a strange soft spot for Howard Hughes ("Melvin and
Howard" is a favorite movie, and I still sing "Bye Bye Blackbird" in honor
of that version of Howard Hughes) intense identification with Welles'
imaginary Charles Foster Kane, and an intense and lifelong admiration for
Welles himself.

None of this has much to do with Marxism, at least as a political movement,
but I am glad that Cubans responded with appropriate admiration to Fischer's
passing. I mourn him, although, of course, that way we all go eventually.
