the listed US states or country of the subscriber are obtained if
possible from the subscribers email address. this means the listing is
simply a sampling of all the members, since more than half the
subscribers post from a .com or .org address, which generally carry no
location information.  i do lookups on .edu addresses.

I will run the demographics again in early January. in the meantime, if
anyone has any good ideas on getting a better sampling of the geographic
location of subscribers, please post your ideas here.

in terms of security issues, locations can be emailed to myself or Lou
offlist. in addition, if you want to send your location somewhat
securely, you can use my encryption key, if you know how to encrypt text
messages. my key is attached at bottom. there are many websites on the
Internet that explain how to use encryption.

Lou and I do not give subscriber<==>location data to anyone, and as you
can see when we post demographics, we do not identify any particular
individual, only how many subscribers are located in a given country.
