Re: [Marxism] The tragedy of Pakistan

Walter asks:
Question to Marla:

Do the people of India have a "real and meaningful democracy"?

Reply:
Walter,
I hope you are well aware of the democratic process in India.
India is a developing capitalist economy.
I am not claiming that India has real or meaningful democracy.
It is not possible to have either one under capitalism.
But in India, the governments regularly get elected to power by elections
and the military does not interfere in power.
The three main arms of the state, The executive, the judiciary and
the parliament function mostly within the limits set by the constitution.
And most importantly, opposition has a definite space in the government.
Its voice is not muffled. And the press is free, in the sense that it is used
under capitalism.
The Left Parties exercise power in 3 of the 30 odd states.
And the present coalition exists in power with the outside support of the Left.
None of these conditions exist in Pakistan. If at all they existed
intermittently, successive military dictators have muffled the press, judiciary
as wll as the political parties.
It is not correct to compare India with Pakistan on an equal footing.
India is a sub-continent and Pakistan was just a small chunk of India before it
was
partitioned by the British imperialists to serve their vested interests.
Walter, you might be interested to know that India has a larger muslim
population
than Pakistan. I do not have the statistics, but I have read somewhere that
India has
the largest number of muslims than any other muslim country
in the world.
Today, India faces a grave danger from Pakistani extremist sponsored terrorist
bombings.
In my own city of Hyderabd, 50 people were killed in serial bomb blasts a few
months back.
India does not send terrorists into Pakistan to bomb their towns.
The terrorists sponsored and pampered by Pakistan bomb its own towns.
In fact, today Pakistan is is the most bombed country, possibly after Iraq.
So, Walter, do not look at India and Pakistan through the same coloured glasses.
It is in the interests of the Western powers to belittle India and show a much
larger
image of Pakistan. Do not be fooled by that.
Vijaya Kumar Marla
