Isn't the case that in Europe the forces towards formation of
a continental wide super-state are actually also favorable to the
breakup of some of the old states? If Belgium, which is
a member of the EU should break up, it is almost certainly
the case that the resulting two new states would remain
members of the EU. Presumably, this would also be
the case if Corsica broke with France, the Basques
from Spain or even if the United Kingdom were to
break up. One can make the case that from an
economic standpoint, economic integration with
the EU as a whole will, in the future, become
increasingly important, at the expense of being
integrated into the older states like Belgium.
