[Marxism] The Army and the National Revolution

Lately, I've been thinking quite a bit about this question Paula
raised some time ago regarding the institutional military and its
political role in general, and Latin America in particular.
Originally the debate concerned the proposed dissolution of said
force, to be replaced by a popular militia, as indicative of
socialism proper. Having been a student of Latin American history
tangentially in the academy, where Latin America was an area focus
for my studies in anthropology, I became aware of the actually
progressive and nationalist role of the armed forces in countries
such as Peru, Panama, Ecuador, and now of course, in Venezuela and
Bolivia.

The southern cone countries, as well as Brazil, had always been
neglected in my studies because I was more concerned with the
indigenous question, and because my portuguese was (and is) non-
existent. Anyway, cued by Nestor's reference to Jorge Abelardo
Ramos, I did a little web investigation and came across a few
brilliant articles on the "Izquierda Naconal" website which I would
like to pass on to those who might be interested in the topic.

Check out Tema 4, "Las Fuerzas Armadas", at : http://
www.izquierdanacional.org/formacion/index.html

In particular, the article "El Ejercito Y La Revolucion Nacional" by
Jorge Abelardo Ramos, is quite useful.
