Re: [Marxism] golden Compass
I have a Sunday-Monday weekend, so I ventured out on the ice
yesterday to catch the matinee. I had finished reading about half of
the first volume, so had a rough idea of where it was going. I agree
completely. Well-acted, great special effects, decent development of
the main characters, and yes, my initial impression upon leaving the
theatre is that it definitely moved too fast. It was only one hour
forty minutes or so in length. IMHO, it could have been a bit longer.
I was also disappointed at the change in the screenplay, in terms of
how Lyra learns the truth about her parents. Rather than her mom
telling her, which was a bit of a stretch, the gyptian angle could
have been played up here much more thoroughly, true to the novel's
account. There could have even been a flashback-type re-enactment of
the conflict between the two father figures, culminating in the
murder scene.
Also, I thought the dim lighting for the final conflict on the ice
between the gyptians and tartars was a mistake. It was difficult to
make out what was going on. They could have had a borealis lighting
effect or something to let us SEE the scene.
Overall, a good movie. Interesting the idea of separating (or rather
killing) the children's daemons, and how that made the children more
docile. I'll be looking forward to that part of the novel.
I do hope they make the sequel. Spread the word so more people see
it, and maybe there will be a sequel.
Greg
