[Marxism] Golden Compass
I saw it Sunday (I didn't think I'd be able to until later in the week, but I
had extra time on my hands after getting kicked out of the UFPJ Steering
Committee meeting in the morning for questioning their plans to bury
themselves in the Democratic Party in 2008. More on that later if anyone's
interested).
I thought it was pretty good from a cinematic perspective: good acting,
photography, fast-moving. But perhaps too fast, and I would very much like to
hear from anyone who went, especially with kids who haven't read the book.
That's because I'm not sure if it cut too much to flow smoothly.
As for whether it stayed close to the book's themes: I think in general it
did, but then the first book has much less in the way of antireligion,
antigod, antisexual repression passages than the second and third. So the
jury's still out.
In any case, the main character, Lyra, comes across every bit as feisty,
independent and goodhearted as in the book, a real role model.
Opinions?
Andy
