Re: [Marxism] Gains in Iraq?

"The sharp decline in the number of American and Iraqi casualties in the
Iraq war over the last five months is set to defuse one of the key
Democratic election issues and bolster those presidential candidates who
have opposed a quick withdrawal from the country."

One of the dangers of the antiwar movement is that is has been an object of
faith that the U.S. can't "win" in Iraq. The people united may never be
defeated
IN THE LONG RUN (not that the people of Iraq are united), and capitalism may be
doomed and the triumph of the working class assured IN THE LONG RUN, and
occupation may not be a stable state of affairs, but sufficient might
(including
lots of checkpoints, walls, and so on) CAN effectively suppress opposition for
long periods of time, at least, effectively enough that the occupation can not
only go on but even expand, as is demonstrated in Israel's occupied territories.

Unfortunately, it's a lot easier to say "the U.S. should withdraw because it
'can't win'" than to say "the U.S. should withdraw because it had no right to
invade Iraq in the first place and the U.S. has no RIGHT to 'win', whether it
can or not."
