David's missing the point, if he thinks I'm suggesting an effort to get the
U.N. to send peace-keeping forces to Ohio or Florida....
The U.N. regularly provides a platform for the U.S. to bully and bullshit
the rest of the planet about democratic rights, although the U.S.
authorities themselves regularly violate the rights of Americans
* to form an institutionally acknowledged political party;
* to get ballot access;
* to present their views in a public venue; and,
* to force the authorities to actually count their votes. .
Why should the U.N. not provide a platform for other nations to take up the
institutional hostility to democratic rights among Americans within the
U.S.? International embarrassment over segregation was an essential reason
the ruling class gave in on civil rights, and the American Indian Movement
went this route at one point.
It's almost as though we have a continuum of polite deference to the
anti-democratic reactionaries that links the mainstream of the Democratic
Party all the way through the Greens and to the various grouplets that try
to run candidates such as the SWP, WWP, etc.
Solidarity!
