Re: [Marxism] Latest on the QUT struggle
What matters here surely is what May Lulu Dunne has said. And todate only
Ted Watson has spoken to her and he has been granted power of attorney to
represent her. In May's own words this is what she says about the experience
of being filmed by QUT.
"My name is May Dunne, I am the woman who was filmed in the Australian Hotel
in Boulia in far west Queensland, by Mr Michael Noonan. My concern is that
I was filmed giving, Darren, a young man who was disabled a hug and kiss as
a greeting, becuase I have a grandson name[d] Darren. I was a bit drunk at
the time an[d] felt emabrassed (shame) the next morning because I thought I
would be seen on television in this way. At no time was I asked permission
to be filmed or sign any paper like most film crew that come here from time
to time. I am shy about being photographed in fact there are no photos in
my house. It is not me to be like that.
I was hurt and shamed to see my actions shown on the internet in Courier
Mail newspaper web site at our local library by Mr Ted Watson on friday
14/9/07.
I watched ABC & SBS hoping I would not be see[n] by everybody especially my
people and family in a drunken way.
I am upset now and want my pictures taken of the website invovling two
disabled boys in this way. It is very very shameful for me and my family as
grandmother and tribal woman. I don't think all of this business making fun
of those two boys who don't understand what is going on. Using me like that
is nasty by making fun or rubbishing people like that who don't understand.
I want something done about this. Yours sincerely May Dunne"
May's partner Richard Saunders also confirms May's version of events.
Research involving Indigenous Australians is supposed to be based on
respect, reciprocity, equality, responsibility, Spirit and Intergrity, and
survival and protection. These matters are before the Human Rights and
Medical Research Council. They are being regarded by the Council as very
serious.
I urge comrades to go to <youtube.com/globaldawning> and watch Ted Watson
explain what he as an Aborigine thinks is wrong with what QUT has done. Also
please circulate the url and get as many people to watch it as possible. We
are up against a very powerful institution with great amounts of public
money to spend on PR campaigns against us. Every hit helps us get the truth
out.
It isw also worth remembering in all this that both John Hookham and I have
lost our jobs because we dared to follow our consciences and speak out
against the power clique in the university.
regards
Gary
