Re: [Marxism] Bollinger "embarrasing and offensive"

I think Carrol and Les are on the right track. Look, Congress will soon
adopt a specific a anti-Iran resolution, which Bush can clearly and rightly
cite as a justification for war on Iran. The resolution has no other
purpose and anyone who later says they didn't know it meant that is a big
liar.

There is no other basis to proceed than that the attack will happen. It MAY
not happen, but nothing that the high authorities are doing indicates
anything but that this is what they want to happen. Iran will not give up
its effort to develop nuclear power. Which despite its dangers (which I
agree about) I think Iran has no alternative under present conditions.

But in the real population, the Ajmadinejad visit HAS undermined the war
drive. The popular opposition is growing, not declining. The isolation of
the powers that be -- not just the Bush gang -- is growing, not decreasing
on the issue of Iran.

They think the attack they are planning is necessary to preserve both the
domination of their nuclear "deterrent" to the independence of the Middle
East. But the war they are planning, if they carry it out, may become the
last gasp of these rather desperate and vastly destructive plans.

This is not a cheerful perspective, but as far as I can see the ruling class
(but not the people) is united at the moment for war with Iran. The Times
response is classical. They claim Bollinger spoke "free;u". Really? What
would have happened if he had opposed the US war drive against Iran, and
oresented the talk as a contribution to that, whaevewr dufferebces bourgeois
or other democrats have with the speaker. Magbe these are his opinions, but
maybe the opinions of such people are irrelevant to what they must do under
present conditions to protect the institutions that provide their lavish
lifestyle.

For someone like Bollinger, keeping the money flowing in from the
billionaire contributors comes and must come way, way ahead of protecting
the people of Iran against a US holocaust,.
