You almost certainly don't want to use the official BitTorrent program.
Its only real purpose has long been as a source code reference for
other, more user-friendly clients.

A really good one is Azureus. It supports Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and
probably others. Azureus would be my "general" recommendation.

I personally use µTorrent, a Windows client, mainly because it's what
I'm used to.

Joaquin mentioned that you can download torrents through the Opera
browser. There's a plugin to let you do the same in Firefox (as well as
some other stuff, apparently).
