[Marxism] Jack Kerouac

Jack Kerouc's legacy is rebellion against the straight
jacket of 1950's US society. His individualist
rebellion, seeking truth on the road, was a sign of
life in a very barren social landscape. The
counterculture of the 1950's, despite every
justifiable criticsm of it one mighgt make, inspired
the cultural rebllion of the 1960's in the United
States. The point of Jack keriouc's life that is worth
remembering is that he inspired the generation that
followed him to seek the truth despite the lies,
racism and hypocrisy of corporate American culture.

The review by Andras Gyorgy from the World Wide
Socialist Web posted on the list by Louis completely
misses the point. Kerouc died a wreck. So what? His
whole generation is dying, or has died ignobly having
left a world that is going to hell in a handbasket.
Kerouc ended up a right winger. So did Max Schactman.
Was he wrong to have been a communist and a Trotskyist
when he was younger?

Kerouc's legacy stands up to time, despite the tragedy
of his life. He took the first step of rebelling
against society, and inspired others to follow him.
The fact that he didn't follow up on it in no way
discredits his achievement. Most people in 1950's US
society were too frightened to do anything that did
not conform to the witchhunting social vision of the
time.
