Carrol Cox says, about the "crtitical support" and the Democrats thing: "I
understand the rationale for this , and agree with it. Unless the entity
offering that critical support is a flea and the recipient is an elephant,
and then who gives a damn."
I think Carrol makes a good point here, in that let's say at least the best
way to apply this sort of tactic is doing it if not as a mass alternative,
at least as an alternative visible to the masses. This is where we are
screwed right now, both on the level of a political/electoral alternative
and on the level of the antiwar movement.
Millions, perhaps tens of millions are going through a very important
experience akin to that of 1964 and the years after with Johnson and and
1968, with the Kennedy-McCarthy ostensibly antiwar campaigns and then
Chicago.
In those years, the pre-existence of the Black Liberation Movement and the
growing overall youth radicalization provided something of an alternative, a
destination, a place to go to AFTER the stab in the back from the Democrats,
even if in the form of an amorphous radical millieu, the on-again, off-again
antiwar coalitions and committees, the somewhat inchoate SDS and the more
cohered radical groups of various tendencies.
There were scores, perhaps hundreds of "underground" radical papers, and a
whole series of expressions associated with political radicalism and even
more what could be called socio-cultural radicalism.
Perhaps today society is gestating some sort of parallel phenomenon,
whatever form it takes, but I don't see it.
More on this general subject in response to Fred Feldman's response to me.
Joaquin
