Re: [Marxism] Incongrous support for Iranian nuclear weapons
Walter, really, Louis's position (despite being a Met's fan AFTER THE
FACT, my mother OTOH, was ALWAYS a Mets fan, much to my shame), is the
same as most people on the socialist left: defense of Iran's right to
defend itself. I don't see Louis' views as different from all that. It
is true that Iran denies it is trying to weaponize uranium. It wants
only to fuel it's plants, it says.
But...that doesn't mean the question isn't poised abstractly, at least:
does Iran have a *right* to arm itself while the US positions nuclear
weapons throughout the Persian gulf and openly talks about 'tactical
nukes' down Iran's nuclear throat? Poised like this it is a totally
legitimate question to ask, AND answer. It is well known historically
that the US has used nuclear weapons on a country that didn't have them
and never attacked a country, let alone invade one, that DID have them.
So, in answering "yes" to the above question, this doesn't mean that one
*advocates* Iranians arm themselves, "merely" understanding that until
imperialism disarms, it's totally legitimate for countries threatened by
the US with nuclear weapons to arm themselves with the same.
David
PS...Louis, I do NOT work at a nuclear power plant, FYI.
