Eli, I think what you say is correct. On air defenses, we don't know
what's degraded, and what's not...and what has been purchased from the
Russians and Chinese. I think this is true, but I suspect that much of
what they have is of limited quantity, even if the quality is high.
Also, the US is very adept now with laser-guided J-Dams in dropping a
bomb from 40 miles a while and 'flying' it where it needs to hit. Not
the mention all the other machines of death that the US seems
particularly creative in developing in large quantities.
The real wild card is the Iranian developed high-speed torpedo based on
Chinese designs that is truly scary. I don't know what the range is and
I couldn't find it on Jane's Defense.
But I think you political point is very correct: it's mostly designed to
ratchet up the pressure, threaten Iranian interests in Iraq, etc. I
won't BET they are going to attack, but it's got us talking about it!
