Well, I'm registered in the California Peace and Freedom Party, which
is nominally socialist. I keep hearing terrible things about the
internal (un)democratic life of the Green Party via my one friend
locally in Los Angeles who's quite active in the Green Party.
Bonnie seems to be counterposinng the basically non-existing Labor
Party, to the Green Party, which has two virtues as far as I can see:
First, it exists. Second, it has ballot status in many places. That
fact of its being a ballot line seems to be the best thing the Green
Party has going for it at this point. I've little idea what the Green
Party has got as far as a record of accomplishments where its
candidates have been elected.
Whether or not the Green Party can evolve into something of a genuine
alternative to the dominant parties of capitalism remains to be seen.
It seems like a hell of an uphill fight. From what I hear there's an
endless pattern of guerrilla warfare between the rightist elements
who want to reduce the differences with the Democrats down to
minimal, and those who, like Peter Camejo and his allies, believe
that it must be a very independent political party with a very
broadly left and pro-immigrant posture.
As I've said before, Peter Camejo is a great candidate and explains
socialist ideas in an excellent way, in addition to knowing a lot
about how government really works. And Peter used to manage a
Paine-Webber brokerage which managed a series of pension plans.
Nader's opposition to a woman's right to choose makes him a quite
dubious prospect. I could not support someone with a position like
that. Here's an item which came up on Nader and abortion today:
