[Marxism] history

I want to second the Abendroth recommendation. It was one of the first things
I read to give me a sense of the broader history of the labor and radical
movements. And reading it while reading my very first Marx, Lenin, etc. helped
me understand what they were referring to.
I remember after that reading a much longer history, again of the European
working class and socialism, which although written by a fairly moderate
social-dem had some great tidbits, like the scene in the German revolution
where the masses stood waiting all day for leadership that never came (or
maybe Abendroth has that anecdote too?).
P.S. Has anyone written an Abendroth-style work (i.e. short but
comprehensive) on working-class movement history which incorporates the Third
World?
