Taliban moving closer to Kandahar 

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Afghan officials say Taliban  fighters have
reclaimed about half of a strategic area  they were driven from by U.S. and
NATO forces in 2006. 

The officials say Taliban fighters have been carrying  out guerrilla attacks
in the Panjwai and Zhare  districts southwest of Kandahar and have swept
through  isolated police posts, The New York Times reported Sunday. 

The militants are now in a position where they can  execute attacks on
Kandahar, the largest city in the  south of the country. 

Hundreds of Taliban fighters were driven from the area  last year, but began
moving back in after NATO troops  partly withdrew in July. 

NATO leaders say the militants now operating in the  area are relying more
heavily on the use of improvised  explosive devices. 

"It's very seldom that we have direct engagement with  the Taliban," said
Brig. Gen. Guy Laroche, the  commander of Canadian forces in Kandahar. "What
they're going to use is I.E.D.'s."
