NY Times - The Kibbutz Sheds Socialism and Gains Popularity
---------------------------------------------------------------- The function
of the kibbutzim/collectives has always been to "sell" Zionism to leftist Jews.
Indoctrination speeches about the necessity of "transferring" Palestinians,
i.e. ethnic cleansing to create a Jewish ethnocracy were given to other
audiences. Leftist Jews heard about "socialism", "equality" and "making the
desert bloom". Notice how this article fails to mention that the land of the
kibbutzim was stolen - former Palestinian villages, homes, farms. According to
Ilan Pappe, the kibbutzniks were among the most vicious advocates of the
dispossession of the native population in 1948. The kibbutzim were always
heavily dependent upon the banks and never had more than 4% of the Israeli
population. They were completely unrepresentative of Israeli society except
that they, like the rest of the colonial settler state benefitted from the
removal of an unwanted human element.

By ISABEL KERSHNER
Israel's kibbutzim are once again thriving, attracting new members with a
mellower version of collective living.
