I don't remember all the speeches from the Republican presidents
post-Vietnam, but I do believe that stance has always been the stock and
trade of the Republican Party or the "Center-Right" in the US. I think what
"mainstream" America finds galling is what Jon Stewart funnily pointed out
in one of his shows. He contrasted a video clip of a Bush speech (IIRC 2004)
in which he pointedly stated that Iraq was in **no** way like Vietnam with a
quick cut of the video clip Bush invocating Vietnam and justifying the
prolongation of the war.
