[Marxism] Indo-US Nuclear Deal: Uranium from Australia

LABOR leader Kevin Rudd has vowed to cancel a proposed
uranium deal with India if he wins government.
Mr Rudd said Labor had "no alternative" but to scrap
the deal as India was not a signatory to the Nuclear
Non-Proliferation Treaty. "I realise that's a very
difficult thing to do but we have a principle when it
comes to this country's foreign policy engagement with
the world," he told ABC-TV.
"We respect the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and
the Atomic Energy Atomic Agency because we've got to
prevent nuclear weapons proliferation in our own
region, in our own neighbourhood and our own backyard.
"No one in Australia wants a nuclear arms race aided
by us in the Indian subcontinent."
Prime Minister John Howard confirmed the deal on
Thursday night, saying Australia had given
in-principle support to exporting uranium to India
subject to India agreeing to stringent safeguards.
State Premier Mike Rann has criticised the deal,
saying it would set a "dangerous precedent, was a
grave mistake and was extremely foolhardy".
Mr Howard, who was campaigning in Adelaide yesterday,
said Mr Rann was "conflicted".
"I don't quite know where the Rann Government stands,"
he said.
"It says it is sticking up for SA but I would have
thought sticking up for SA is sensibly exporting the
uranium reserves in this state, sensibly exporting the
uranium subject to the proper safeguards."
Mr Howard admitted talk about sales of uranium to
Russia would come up when President Vladimir Putin
visited Australia for the APEC summit next month.
