Just to add one point Angelus did not mention in his list: In the 80ties
Lafontaine advocated a reduction in working hours without any salary
compensations.

While I basically agree with Angelus' assessment of Lafontaine you have to note
that within "The Left" his positions are to the left of the dominant Bisky-Gysi
group (not to talk about the Berlin state leadership). Eg. Lafontaine opposes
the privatisation of public services, whereas the "The Left", where in power is
favours such privatisation (eg. the Berlin state-owned Bankgesellschaft or the
council houses in Dresden).

Bisky and Gysi sometimes sound as if they want to prove that a leftist can be a
"respectable" politician, while Lafontaine nowadays sounds as if he wants to
prove that a former minister of finance can be a true leftist.
