I believe that Stephen Jay Gould did regard Wallace as a kind of
"ultra-Darwinist" in the sense of putting an even higher premium on the
principle of natural selection as THE explanation for evolutionary change than
did Darwin. Ironically, when it came to the subject of the emergence of man,
Wallace regarded natural selection as inadequate to explain what happened, so
he then posited a role for divine intervention.

Darwin's who simultaneously (and initially unknown to Darwin) came up with
the the conception of evolution (Descent with Modification via natural
