Gould argued long ago that evolution was a bush, not a neat tree. And he
has argued in some detail in _The Structure of Evolutionary Theory_ that
while Darwin sometimes let himself slip on the whole Darwin did NOT
claim that evolution was progressive or even tended to be progressive.
(Whatever "progressive" might mean in such a context.)
