Mark Lause and Marvin Gandall criticize my position from opposite sides.
For Marvin, I'm being malthusian. He says new energy sources might be
developed and people might accept the conversion cost and ...
Marvin is whistling past the graveyard. Capitalism's appetite for expansion
is infinite, the world is finite. It is as simple as that.
Mark emphasizes "the hand-to-mouth poverty you see 'on the ground' in most
American cities," and he adds, "We should also remember that even those
workers who might be doing well have no real security and can pass little
security on to their children."
Clever people will remember that I mentioned both these things. But what's
the point? That the median standard of living really hasn't risen? That the
average size of homes hasn't increased? That the number of cars, telephones,
TV sets, the amounts spent of entertainment, etc, etc, etc, haven't risen?
We have millions of desperately poor people in the United States. We also
have, at least a couple hundred million working people, if you include the
families, who gaily share in the feast of U.S. domination and exploitation
of the entire world, who are PROUD to be Americans and are against the Iraq
war because "we" are getting our asses kicked.
Joaquin
