[Marxism] Prison guards (was: Police unions etc.)

And what about the repressive nature of social work? How about teaching?
And I've already talked about workers in industries that pollute....

This is the nature of the system in which working people do what they think
they need to do in order to get by...without being able to think too deeply
about it. Everything fits together in such a way as to permit the hierarchy
to continue ruling.

You think YOU picked a pure way to make a living? I suppose it's possible
in theory. You pay taxes?

Grow up.

The problem's the system.

Reply:

Well...when a police officer is swinging a billy-club over the head of an
immigrant at an immigrant's rights march I'm afraid my sympathy is with the
immigrant. When a pack of cops are getting stuck into a black man for driving
through a red light, I don't think it's a time to try and reach them with a
flyer explaining that they too are victims of the system.

The issue fundamentally is consciousness, my learned friend. In order to
defeat the system, challenge the system, we have to at some point challenge the

tools of the system - i.e. the police - when they are in this role. However,
and I speak from experience, if I come into contact with a cop who is off duty
in a neutral setting, this is a different matter. Then I will engage. Other
than that the police can only ever be my implacable enemy.

Your previous point re workers and pollution was so embarrassingly ludicrous
in the context of counterposing them to US troops killing and brutalising
Iraqi men, women and children that I am truly shocked you have decided to
reprise it. Are you drunk?

J
