Dear Louis,

You are quite right about what could have happened and what should
have happened, if what could have happened and should have happened
had in practice actually happened. I wish the same thing as you do.
Since we cannot change the past, we can only try to understand what
took place. 

However, what could and should have happened did not, in fact,
take place. The Soviet Union both survived and defeated the Nazi's
assault. I wish what what you propose would have happened and believe
that the result would have been just as you're suggesting. However, 
it didn't come to pass as you and I wish that it would have then.

We keep coming back to that very nettlesome national question, 
which I see from your comment here that you do understand.

If grandmother had had balls, she'd have been grandfather.
