There never would have been such an action unless there had been a
massive antiwar movement that focused on "Bringing the Troops Home" and
similar slogans. These veterans felt that the movement was not judging
them, but the government.

People should check the archives of the website for the movie "Sir, No
Sir" that documents the Vietnam GI antiwar movement:

You will learn about GI Coffeehouses, a movement that the SWP--my
organization--was not that involved with. All around the country these
places sprung up near military bases. GI's were encouraged to come by
and hang out, while listening to folk music. Needless to say, there was
lots of antiwar literature. If these Coffeehouses had made "confession"
a litmus test, they would have remained empty.
