Re: [Marxism] Paper on Japanese nuclear reactors and earth quakes
Joaquin: ?Divide the 1000 year event by 50, and you get that, on
average, a French nuclear power plant will face one of those "freak"
earthquakes every 20 years.?
I?m dying here! I bet your wonderful 12 year old son can see what?s wrong with
this
math. I love it! Ha!
So?seeing as it?s STILL one event in 1,000 years (no matter how many power
plants
you have, or how many widgets or French bistros :)?. I couldn?t find much of
French
seismic activity, of which there is a lot of but not very large. As the
Japanese quake proved,
and if you had read the paper instead of being stopped by your inability to do
averages
(no, really, I?m still laughing about that) you?d see that Japanese NPPs have
stood up
to a lot worse. They all have settings designed to trip the unit off line (both
the reactor
and the turbine-generator) before things start ?splitting open? and causing
problems.
I don?t live by fear and I wouldn?t guide the worlds energy policy by fear. I
know that fossil
fuel is killing NOW (thousands), polluting now, causing huge ecological damage
right now
yet that seems to get a pass from you and others. Now, I know you are concerned
about this
as any other, I?m only making such a rhetorical statement because the one and
only base-load
source of energy that hasn?t actually killed * anyone * in the US (or France)
is facing demands
of being shutdown based on the * fear * that something in 1,000 years can kill
everyone
everywhere (which it can?t and won?t).
I think it?s serious enough that we can deal with the problems of nuclear
energy, which seem to
pale in comparison to the thousands that are dying every day because of fossil
fuel now, and
how it may effect our future with climate change, which is a lot scarier, to me
any way, than
what ?might happen? in 1,000 years.
