[Marxism] Why Watergate still matters

The United States is a country with little interest in history. Ours is
the country of Henry Ford, the fascist-minded owner of the company whose
automobiles bear his name, and who famously said, "History is bunk."

Today is the 35th anniversary of the Watergate break-in, carried out
by rightist Cuban exile militants and former veterans of the Bay of Pigs
invasion of Cuba, under the direction of the election campaign committee
of the then President of the United States. It was aptly named the Committee
to Re-Elect the President, acronym CREEP. NPR's Daniel Schorr's commentary
this morning reminded me of the anniversary. He sees similarities between
the attitudes and behavior of Nixon and the Bush administration today, and
wonders how long it will take to find out what the Bush administration has
itself been really up to.. It's just two short minutes long:

Rightist Cuban exile militants played played a powerful role following
their failure at the Bay of Pigs, but that long ago. Or was it? While the
great majority of Cubans living in the United States live their lives as
law-abiding people, just trying to enjoy the benefits of American life,
a small but determined minority have played an influential and extremely
negative role in the life of the United States.

Here's a short survey:

Rightist exiles continue to operate in the United States with impunity,
as the freedom granted recently to Luis Posada Carriles once again shows.
Orlando Bosch walks freely on the streets of Miami, and the government in
Washington has reduced charges against Roberto Ferro, another Cuban exile
militant, found with fifteen HUNDRED weapons in his California home not
long ago. He, too, will presumably have his wrist slapped. Yes, these
rightist Cuban exile militants continue operating with impunity right up
to the present moment. And Cuba remains the only country on the planet
where a citizen of the United States must obtain a written permission
slip from the federal government should she or he wish to visit their
mother or father should mom or day continue to live in Cuba.

Happy Father's Day!

Why Watergate matters

Thirty-five years later, the scandal that brought down
Richard Nixon remains a powerful warning about the abuse of power.
