[Marxism] How the media does it
I cut this sentence from the Guardian rept of events in Gaza:
"Islamists strengthen grip in Gaza *but* western governments, including US,
side with Palestinian president in the West Bank" (my exphasis).
The key word is the conjunction -"but". It suggest somehow a disjunction
between the two actions - Hamas victory and Western response to side with
Abbas. As if the West was somehow or other a reluctant participant. The
correct conjunction should of course be "therefore". That would capture
something of the active role played by the US in the attempted putsch by
Dahlan's thugs, who needless to say had been armed and financed by the US.
Just one little three letter, but such semantic deception!
regards
Gary
