In listening to eyewitness accounts of the aftermath, on Democracy
Now, the impression I got is that Hamas has made it clear that their
target is only those sections of Fatah that had already refused to
participate in the unity government and were effectively attempting to
execute a military coup against the rightfully elected government.
One guest said that Hamas had issued statements that they were not
against Fatah as a whole, only those who collaborated with the
occupation forces.

They joined a unity government, but collaborationist elements in Fatah
attacked them militarily, and worked against them politically.  You
can't form a unity government with people who are actively trying to
bury you with the help of the same forces you are supposedly unified
against.

That you somehow equate Hamas with the now defunct Preventive Security
Force is, well, fucking ignorant.
