[Marxism] Take London-based Poet Stephen Spender...
>Ben Ben writes, "if one looks at the 'encounter' magazines, it's difficult
>not to find something fishy going on - the articles are uniformly
>unsympathetic and red-baiting."
>And this made it different from most other bourgeois publications in those
>days? I must have missed the editorials in TIME defending the
>accomplishments of the USSR while I was growing up in the 1960's. There was
>nothing "fishy" about red-baiting back then.
what you're missing, or have overlooked, is the second paragraph of my post -
the one you're here responding to;
my point was that the editorial line of "encounter", in respect of 1968, did
not
tally with spender's own published political position - repeatedly.
compare spender's writing on students in revolt with the kind of smearing
"reports" by michael beloff, published in "encounter".
so, any speculation as to what spender did or did not know must be predicated
from an acknowledgment of this disjuncture. have you actually ever looked at
the journal you're talking about, joaquin?
