  if one looks at the "encounter" magazines, it's difficult not to find 
something fishy 
  going on - the articles are uniformly unsympathetic and red-baiting.
   
  spender's own book on 1968 is of an entirely different tenor from the attacks 
on protesting
  students published in "encounter". perhaps he had a very wide, and 
ill-informed, notion of criticism of the left from the left as legit - both in 
his book and in the (unread?) articles he ushered into "encounter"?
