Sayan: "It seems to me that one may, without being religious, may be a
leftist/marxist AND hold the view that NO human life cannot be taken, AND
believe that an embryo is alive, and therefore take the view that abortion
is permissible only if the mother's life is in danger and in NO
circumstances otherwise."
Because human life, in all cultures that I know of, begins at birth. And
biologically, an embryo is not capable of sustaining life or developing into
a baby independently. The belief that an embryo is a separate and distinct
human life is quintessentially a religious belief, and whether Sayan or
someone else claims otherwise does not change its nature.
But the argument that life begins at conception --or some other point during
gestation-- is simply an argument that women are men's property just like
any other instrument of production.
"But you Communists would introduce community of women, screams the
bourgeoisie in chorus.
"The bourgeois sees his wife a mere instrument of production. He hears that
the instruments of production are to be exploited in common, and, naturally,
can come to no other conclusion that the lot of being common to all will
likewise fall to the women.
"He has not even a suspicion that the real point aimed at is to do away with
the status of women as mere instruments of production."
(From the Manifesto of the Communist Party)
