The sect left has failed. It is not part of the solution, it is part of the
problem. Groups like the LCR, LO, CP, etc., are not contributions to the
constitution of a real party of working people, they are an *obstacle.* The
counterposition of these political sect apparatuses to the social and
protest movements and each other is the MAIN content of their campaigns.
That elides quite a few distinctions. First of all, because the main
reason for the failure of the left to get a unity candidate was the
attitude and operations of the PCF. The other parties were not
flawless in that. Secondly, because it is not true that the main
content of all these "sect" campaigns was to distinguish itself from
other left candidates or the social movement - Besancenot's campaign
was clearly marked by an attempt to engage with that movement, and did
not (so far as I observed) spend a lot of time waffling about how evil
Laguiller was.
The argument is also deeply sectarian in itself. It supposes that one
can build a real party of the working people without engaging the
committed cores of activists who make up the existing parties. As
things now stand, the LCR is by far the left-of-left party with most
support, and I doubt you'd get very far without including them in such
a move.
