Like it or not, Malcolm X does not speak for my many neighbors (all African
Americans) who displayed the flag after September 11 and regularly do so on
holidays. Nor for the many Hispanics and American Indians who identify with
the flag and see that identification as a reflection of the justice behind
their claims to citizenship, etc.
I display the flag, too, using banners like the red flag flown at Bunker
Hill or the 34-star flag of the revolutionary and emancipationist Union.
In any event, I don't think anything said here affects the reality that the
American flag symbolizes different things to different people. Whatever
meaning it has beyond its identification with the government and the ruling
class is a matter to be shaped in future by the masses and not for the small
circles in the present, concerned about what the textbooks and manuals tell
us should be the case.
Solidarity!
Mark L.
