It is unfortunate that, in case of an American attack, the people of Iran and
the wider region are going to pay, yet again, for the unprincipled scheming and
intrigues of the Iranian regime. All the prattle from that quarter about
anti-imperialism has been shown for what it is by their toying with
sectarianism in Iraq, and their collusion with the American occupation which
has frequently supported the same sectarian forces.

Does anyone seriously argue that the American ruling class are going to
suddenly come to their senses and realise at this point that, having destroyed
the Iraqi state and lacking a social basis on which to establish a truly
dependent client regime, they ought to simply cut their losses by withdrawing?
On the contrary, it is obvious that the political losses they will face by
simply withdrawing are so enormous and of such historical significance as to
compel them to rush further into the quagmire. Hence the preparations for the
attack on Iran, whose close ties to the Shia elite must make it, in the eyes of
the US, a primary obstacle to the US goal of establishing a viable and supine
client regime without the divided loyalties of the mafiosi in power now. So, a
blitzkrieg against Iran is conceived as a way stabilise the situation for the
occupation Iraq and, in Lebanon, to achieve that which the Israelis failed to
do in their attack against Hezbollah in the summer.

To imagine that the US war machine is going to be stopped by reason, or an
unexpected outbreak of sanity in the ruling quarters there, is nothing but
wishful thinking. The stakes for the US ruling class at this point are so high
that they won't stop until they're stopped by people of the US -- and there's
little sign of the people being ready to do so yet.
