I remember reading that part before the election. It's striking how he (or the statement, anyway) carefully avoids saying anything that could possibly be construed as "it's okay to be gay" or even "it's not fair to attack homosexuals." He only says (and he says it a number of times) that a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage is a waste of time.

"Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X (not to mention Nat Turner) were preachers. Their priorities were clear: "Let Justice roll down like a mighty stream." They both took instruction from that section of Matthew 25:44 which enjoins believers to feed the hungry and thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, heal the sick, and visit those in prison. So, in light of this tradition, where should we rank banning gay marriage on our list of priorities?"
