Two interesting items in today's NYT Book Review:
First, the author of the I.F. Stone bio reviewed (sic) last week by Paul Berman
puts in context the quotes he mangled to try to prove that Izzy was a Soviet
spy.
Second, Jacob Heilbrunn, in reviewing a book on Bush's "delusional" (his very
appropriate word) march to war, says:
"The attention [the authors] lavish on both the Miller and the Plame cases is
out of all proportion to their true significance. These chapters reach a level
of detail that is simply eye-glazing. To read Isikoff and Corn, one would think
that Miller (whose conduct was bad enough) and The Times were almost uniquely
responsible for abetting the administration?s march to war."
I haven't seen the book (one of whose coauthors is a Nation editor), so I don't
know what proportion of it is devoted to Judith Miller. But Heilbrunn - a
regular Book Review contributor -- is perhaps feeling a tad guilty and
defensive about his employer's contributions to the war effort. I can
distinctly remember 2, 3, 4 times a week in the run-up to the war seeing lead
articles by Miller et al. "proving" the Administration's claims -- or providing
"evidence" for claims they would soon make.
So spare me, Jacob. If Goebbels' propaganda was legally liable at Nuremburg for
the Nazis' war of aggression, Miller is just as culpable for Bush's war crimes.
