Re: [Marxism] Interesting Article by Goff

Or this....Stan's commentary reminded me of this article which I wrote for
Swans 6 years ago and Gilles was kind enough to publish.

http://www.swans.com/library/art6/mmw007.html

I will admit to being much less versed in Marxist literature than many
others on this list and so I hope I will given some slack for speaking
more from the heart than the intellect and for stating what may be more
than obvious to many.

That said, I have observed the following, as parent, worker, woman.

The State makes its desires known in many ways through its myriad
representatives, who constantly reinforce the values that support State
interests. At the heart, it may be quite simple. Children naturally
gravitate toward activities of pleasure, but society must force them to
sublimate those desires as they grow to create a labor force so that
society can continue and they can find their appropriate role within it.
The harder and faster the labor force needs to work, the more sublimation
required. As a parent, my role is to "prepare" my children to compete,
study harder in a world of ever diminishing opportunities, and in every
way possible force them to relinquish their childish desires for fun and
pleasure.

The more desparate the economic situation, the more sublimation, which
causes, in turn, more perversions to surface, such as the horrid videos
that Stan mentions in his article. I could go on, but would end with just
this one observation. I see even less joy than I did 6 years ago, if joy
can indeed be a measure of the health of a society.
