RE: [Marxism] Newman responds to Bustelo re Sheridan

I will confess that I had to force myself to read Andy Newman's response
to
me, having largely exhausted my interest in this case. 

That because, with SSP members now presenting themselves openly as paid
collaborators of the Murdoch media machine's campaign against the most
prominent socialist in Scotland, to the glee of the SSP leadership,
there
really isn't that much more to say. 

You're either for that sort of thing or against it.


Fred responds:

I quite agree with Joaquin on this.  I find the whole subject
depressing.  But I can't let go of the feeling that getting this
"internal" fight right in a socialist group I had come to identify with,
is very important for revolutionaries internationally.

specific article, and if possible the URL of the News of the World
article in which an SSP member called for jailing Sheridan, presumably
for alleged perjury and not for having sex out of wedlock, which the SSP
also seems to regard as an unforgivable crime.  No doubt completely on
his own for the SSP has supposedly rejected one-man-leadership [very
bad] in favor of "collective leadership" [supposedly very good,
especially when it comes to denying responsibility for what individuals
do in your name/

Frankly, it seem clear to me now that Sheridan was systematically driven
out of the organization by a sex witch-hunt based at least accepting as
the ultimate truth the statements of the News of the World "expose" of
Sheridan's private life.

I want to also note the continual attacks in the SSP and pro-SSP
publications on Sheridan's wife for what they seem to regard as the
crime of "standing by her man" in this instance.  The SSP supporters
love to sneer at her as the "perfect wife" although, for all I know, she
may be more feminist, more revolutionary, more Scottish nationalist than
any of them.
Even if her standing by Sheridan against News of the World is totally
personally motivated, it is more on our side of the class line than the
SSP leadership's crossing of class lines in the name of holy factional
war against Sheridan.
